While technology is booming, malware seems to keep rising too. according to recent study  the months of April and May 2012 has a significant increase in malware, phishing and spam based on the German e-mail security provider E-Mail Security Report for June 2012. The explosive rise in the number of malware infected e-mails are growing strongly and virus outbreaks has tripled. Significant rise is cause by  widespread Trojan whose primary purpose is to steal information, usually financial data such as credentials for online banking,  con delivery notifications, mobile phone bills and order statements were once again popular tricks. Incident of black mailing is also rampant where recipients has threatened with legal action and claim to have photographic evidence attached. However,a Trojan malware is released once the attachment is opened. Spam emails are also peeking it’s height by 17.3% in May alone.

The latest threats and culprit for the above increase of malware are Zeus also known as Zbot,  Matsnu, Bublik and Gypikon Trojans.  The contributing factors causing major increase of spam in the Months of April and May was the continued trend of using public holidays and major events as an occasion or cover for spam campaigns. Mother’s Day, the Olympic Games in London were already having an influence on spam activities in May and also play a role in the increase in spam and phishing emails.
