Beginners guide to IP Address
You may see the term IP Address mentioned a lot in relation to web hosting and probably wondering what it means and if it’s important for you understand it, or even know anything about it at all. Read the guide below:
Philippine web hosting provider and most networks today, including all computers, that is connected to the Internet needs to have a unique identification. In the TCP/IP protocol, the unique identifier for a computer is called its IP address, short for internet protocol address, The IP address is effectively the address of a computer , It is in many ways similar to your house street address, if you want mail delivered you need an address and you need to give that address out to people who might want to send you mail.
The IP addresses for web servers and other computers with a permanent Internet connection normally do not change; therefore, they are called static IP addresses.Unlike computers with a permanent (cable or xDSL) connection, computers on dial-up connections typically have an IP address that changes each time they connect to the Internet. These so-called dynamic IP addresses are assigned by the ISP (from a “pool” of currently available IP addresses) for the duration of the connection.
An IP address is simply a number between zero and approximately 4.3 billion. It is often shown as four “octets” (numbers between 0 and 255) in “dotted decimal” notation, e.g.: “64.236.24.28″.
Using more than one site on an IP address is called sharing IPs or a Shared IP address. If a site has its own IP address, and shares with no one else, it is called a Unique IP address.
You can always reach a site which has a unique IP address by using its IP address alone, but you can’t reach a site using a shared IP address by typing in the IP address alone, in Shared IP you need to type in the domain name to reach a site.
One common reason for having a unique IP address is that you can only use SSL encryption on a unique IP address. In order for a person to transmit sensitive data over the internet at times this data must be encrypted to prevent someone from intercepting the information. You can only use this encryption (called SSL) when the web site has its own IP address (unique IP) and doesn’t work on a shared IP.
There are about 4.3 billion IP addresses. The class-based, legacy addressing scheme places heavy restrictions on the distribution of these addresses. That is why, If you own several sites and want to link these sites together, it is safer to spread out the hosting amongst several reputable hosting companies on different IP address’s. This will reduce the possibility of your sites getting either banned or downgraded by the search engines. If you use the services of an unethical Search Engine Optimization company, they may try to artificially build your site’s page rank by placing numerous links to you from con sites set up specifically for that purpose; most likely, these sites will all be hosted in the same IP Address block which is illegal and caused your site to be banned.
When choosing SEO and web hosting provider make sure that you are dealing with an honest company that won’t get you in trouble.
