May 1 is a “Red Letter Day” in the Philippines celebrating 1010^th Labor Day, giving honors to Filipino workers and the entire Labor Sector. The Filipinos will be conducting and participating in various activities, including marches, rallies, and meetings by some sectors in the labor movement. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), teaming up with the Philippine top companies, will also conduct various “job fairs” across the regions giving opportunities and as a way of celebrating the event.

History:

Labor Day is a non-working holiday celebrated on May 1 of every year in the Philippines. This is workers day all over the country; it was first celebrated in 1903, during the rule of the US government, that year, more than a hundred thousand workers organized by the Union Obrero Democratica de Filipinas (UODF) marched to Malacañang on the first of May to demand better working conditions. The American colonial government was alarmed. The Philippine Constabulary, composed of Americans and Filipinos, raided the printing press of UODF and arrested its president, Dominador Gomez, for illegal assembly and sedition.

Ten years later, on May 1, 1913, Congreso Obrero de Filipinas was organized, It has origins specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest and fought for abolition of child labor, just labor standards for women, and liability of capitalists led by Herminigildo Cruz.

Since then, Labor Day in the Philippines has been commemorated and celebrated with various activities and it is appropriate, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of workers and labor movement in general.

The Day of Valor (Araw ng Kagitingan)

Araw ng Kagitingan or known as “The Day of Valor” is a non working holiday in the Philippines, A national observance until a Letter of Instruction No. 1087, dated on November 26, 1980. The Celebration commemorates the heroism of Filipino and American soldiers during the war against Japanese troops. The Soldiers where forced to hike to Camp O’Donnell in San Fernando in dawn of April 9, 1942 where thousands of soldiers died of thirst, starvation and disease during the hike (also known as The Bataan death March).

Araw ng Kagitingan not only remembers these terrible losses in our history but also celebrates the first Filipino military victory over the Japanese Imperial Forces with the Battle of Besang Pass in June 14, 1945. The battle, fought in Ilocos Sur by the predominantly Filipino Northern Luzon guerillas, paved the way for the defeat of the infamous Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita and eventually led to his capture in the Cordilleras.

We could only imagine the horror of that Marched, and the uncertainty the future brought even if they reached Camp O’Donnell. Marking a particular date in the calendar to remember these heroes is the least the nation can do to honor their heroism, valor, and endurance, an honor to the people who helped bring democracy and freedom in the Philippines during the World War II era.

Celebrate this monumental event in our History in honor of the Great men who suffered atrocities for our democracy. The march to true democracy continues, and this is the lesson we could hand down to future generations, to value sense of history and pick up some valuable lessons from these veterans’ ordeal.

The Resurrection of Christ is not only the greatest Christian feast; it is the fulfillment of our faith as Christians. Through His Death, Christ destroyed our bondage to sin; through His Resurrection, He brought us the promise of new life, both in Heaven and on earth. The Resurrection of Christ also demonstrated that God accepted Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. The grave could not hold Him. He lives, and He sits today at the right hand of God the Father in heaven. It proves that God has the power to raise us from the dead. It guarantees that those who believe in Christ will not remain dead, but will be resurrected unto eternal life which we are all hoping for, let us rejoice and give our thankful prayer to God who saves us.

Matthew 28:1-10
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
