It is alway a good idea to upgrade your WordPress installation to the latest build. But before every upgrade it is just as important that you backup your site.

Even if you use the automatic upgrader it is still a good idea to backup. This is where cpanel backup comes in handy.

cpanel backup

To learn more on how to backup your site using cpanel backup, please refer to our earlier post on Cpanel Backup.

WordPress 3.1.1 is now available!

This is a mandatory maintenance and security release that fixes almost thirty issues in 3.1, including:

Some security hardening to media uploads

Performance improvements

Fixes for IIS6 support

Fixes for taxonomy and PATHINFO (/index.php/) permalinks

Fixes for various query and taxonomy edge cases that caused some plugin compatibility issues

The latest version according to WordPress New addresses the following issues:

Hardens CSRF prevention in the media uploader.

Avoids a PHP crash in certain environments when handling devilishly devised links in comments

Addresses an XSS flaw

So if you are running wordpress it is a good idea to update now.

Updating is pretty easy and automated. Download 3.1.1 or update automatically from the Dashboard → Updates menu in your site’s admin area as depicted in the image below.
